The Edgar Shannon Library, University of Virginia, Charlottesville
The Edgar Shannon Library at the University of Virginia has been transformed into a modern hub for learning and collaboration. Combining a 100,000 sf renovation of the historic 1938 structure with a seamlessly integrated 130,000 sf addition, the project introduces open, accessible spaces such as reading rooms, skylit study courts, a café, and flexible event areas, and preservation and conservation labs. Seamlessly blending old and new, our design enhances navigation, natural light, and community engagement. Restored historic spaces and upgraded systems ensure functionality, charm, and sense of place. The LEED V4 Gold-certified library supports digital scholarship, collection growth, and evolving academic needs, creating a dynamic space for innovation and discovery.
