Private Residence, Bloomfield Hills

The house is located in Bloomfield Hills outside Detroit, Michigan. The site is situated on a knoll over-looking a small lake in rolling hills typical of the area. The house design is inspired by the small pavilions built around Versailles by French aristocracy in the 18th Century to escape the tedium of life at court. These houses have inspired architects for centuries up until the early 20th Century. David Adler, in particular, in his early houses in suburban Chicago captured their sprit in his brilliant adaptation of the transitional period that extended from the Louis XV to the Louis XVI styles. Decidedly Neo-Classic in temperament they retained enough Rocaille from the Louis XV to suggest a life that was ordered yet carefree.
