Private Residence, Wilmette

This house is located on a tree-lined street of an old North Shore Chicago suburb, where neighboring residences are large and imposing. The modest rooms are massed vertically, and the house is located at the front of the site in line with the facades of the adjacent residences. The broad painted wood porch creates a delicate “skirt” that effectively widens the facade, and provides a dramatic front entry. A primary concern was the idea that the house should grow within the established vocabulary of the neighborhood and appear as if it had always been there. The result is a modest house contextually at home with its older and larger neighbors.
